Lydia Rui, the Naarm/ Melbourne-based director, spent her childhood growing up between China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, and it’s this transnational background that allows her to bring a particularly nuanced and empathetic eye to her subject matter. After graduating with a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Rui went on to work as a videographer for Beyoncé Knowles’ Mrs Carter World Tour throughout North America and Europe. Her short documentary, ‘This is Yarra’ (2018), will be premiering as the only the Australian film in the Shorts Competition at DOC NYC 2018—America’s largest Academy Award-qualifying documentary festival. Lydia strives to empower, enliven and enrich through her storytelling.
